**CHAINSAW QUALIFICATIONS – THE FACTS AND CHANGES**
From 3rd Sept 2012 there have been changes made to the world of chainsaw training and assessment.
Brief History
In 2009 the Trees and Timber Industry Group were advised by industry that the National Occupational Standards (NOS) were not fit for purpose. As a result the NOS were rewritten to ensure it had full industry commitment before it was signed off in 2011. At the same time Government introduced the Qualifications and Credits Framework (QCF) which allow learners to achieve vocational qualifications/units through a more flexible route. The combination of both QCF and a revised NOS has meant that all chainsaw training course and assessment schedules needed revising to accomodate the changes. From 2002 – 2012 Lantra and City and Guilds (NPTC) engaged in an alliance which meant that Lantra provided the chainsaw training while NPTC undertook the assessments. However in Sept 2012 there cam a parting of the ways between NPTC and Lantra. Both organisations now offer training and assessments in a wide range of subjects. For the chainsaw learner this will offer choice. The qualification offered by Lantra, NPTC or another awarding organisation will be exactly the same as they are all regulated by the Qualifications and Credits Framework (QCF).
QCF Qualifications and Units
The new QCF units are known by the unit/qualification title and not prefixed by ‘CS’ as previously named (2002-2012). The QCF unit/qualification can be offered by any awarding organisation. Achieving qualifications identifies a competent operator and helps to meet the health and safety requirements of the industry. There are a range of pratical assessments covering all aspects of chainsaw work. A QCF level 2 in chainsaw maintenance and cross cutting timber is the mandatory qualification that is a prerequisite to many of the level 2 and 3 qualifications. Once the mandatory qualifications have been achieved learners can take further qualifications to meet the needs of their chosen career pathways. The learner will be observed completing a series of tasks relevant to the qualification and the assessor will ask questions to check their understanding. Lantra Award’s QCF qualifications fulfill all trade industry criteria. They are fully accepted by regulatory bodies and conform to the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974. The QCF qualification (Certificate of Competance) will provide a licence to practice so learners fulfill all legal and trade/industry criteria.
